...it was meant to be...

as we reached the top of knight street and killarney, we saw the crowds gathering on the hill, some standing, others leaning on fence posts, many sitting on top of their cars, waiting for the show to begin. and so we had to. and we did. we pulled into the parking lot of killarney community center, turned on our radio to 101.1FM and sat and watched the lights hit the skies. and boy, did they ever hit the skies! promptly at 10pm, the music began, and we were treated to a feast of fiery candied explosions, with colors ranging from bright greens and yellows to luminescent reds and purples.

the discovery of gunpowder and the subsequent invention of true fireworks is owed to the chinese and tonight, they proved that those who invent knows best. explosion after explosion happened right on cue with the music, a cultural exploration of east meets west as we were treated to the fusion of the traditional gu-zheng with the classical western piano.

but as they say, all good things must come to an end, and so, with the music reaching its predictable but unforgettable climax, china bid us bonne soir with the lighting of our english bay skies filled with glowing platinum blonde flares, tens upon thousands exploding one after the other and trailing into the darkness of the night.

her music presents solid sonic evidence that the past really didn't go anywhere and, in turn, that perhaps too many musicians focus far too heavily on the flavor of the month at the expense of drawing on the deep wells of both traditional and pop music.

songs, built like proverbial brick facilities
the quality of the arrangements a revelation of musical literacy and
a unique voice, in every sense of the word

when was the last time you heard a love song about the subtle joys of starting and raising a family, or a song about making love that had anything more going on than the f-word?

if they are the windows into our souls
then what do these dreams mean?

...feeling the swell of an unborn child underneath the skin of my belly...
...walking through a pathway that weaves and winds, not knowing where the path leads, but knowing where i am going...
...sleeping in a bed filled with cushions that wrap themselves around my limbs like curious fingers and hands...
...weeping through the altar of an unsung wedding song, clutching at the tatters of an unworn wedding gown...
...waiting...breathing...holding...needing to wash the slim from my skin...

they say that in the world of dreams, rules of reality need not apply. that each dream is unique, and every dream is connected with each person's own reality. thus, in interpreting one's dreams, one is given the remarkable gift of insight into their own selves. since dreams can be understood in the context of repressed thoughts, sometimes dreaming serves as an outlet for those thoughts and impulses repressed during the day.

if they are the only windows into our souls
then what do these dreams mean?

it was one of those days when you say to yourself i need a road trip, and it so happens that one of your closest friends feel exactly the same way too, and before you know it, you're sitting in the car with the windows rolled down, feet up on the dashboard if you're not driving, and you pull up to one of southwestern british columbia's most beautiful and largest fresh water lakes in the world.

so how do you celebrate?

marvelling at the fact
that we managed to get
a room overlooking the lake
on one day's notice.
