as we reached the top of knight street and killarney, we saw the crowds gathering on the hill, some standing, others leaning on fence posts, many sitting on top of their cars, waiting for the show to begin. and so we had to. and we did. we pulled into the parking lot of killarney community center, turned on our radio to 101.1FM and sat and watched the lights hit the skies. and boy, did they ever hit the skies! promptly at 10pm, the music began, and we were treated to a feast of fiery candied explosions, with colors ranging from bright greens and yellows to luminescent reds and purples.
the discovery of gunpowder and the subsequent invention of true fireworks is owed to the chinese and tonight, they proved that those who invent knows best. explosion after explosion happened right on cue with the music, a cultural exploration of east meets west as we were treated to the fusion of the traditional gu-zheng with the classical western piano.
but as they say, all good things must come to an end, and so, with the music reaching its predictable but unforgettable climax, china bid us bonne soir with the lighting of our english bay skies filled with glowing platinum blonde flares, tens upon thousands exploding one after the other and trailing into the darkness of the night.
